October 5, 2017

Dear CYO Parents & Guardians, Student-Athletes, and Potential Coaches,

It’s hard to believe, but CYO basketball season is quickly approaching and it’s time to be preparing.  This information is regarding the CYO Coaches’ Certification program.

We have planned three sessions which will focus mainly on metro Toledo league rules:

  • Tuesday, October 24th @ Toledo St. Ursula Academy (6-9 pm)
  • Monday, November 13th @ Toledo Notre Dame Academy (6-9 pm)
  • Tuesday, November 28th @ Toledo St. John’s Jesuit High School (6-9 pm)

One session will focus on the Tri-Deanery grade school league rules:

  • Monday, October 16th @ Tiffin St. Joseph Parish (Upper Room 7-10 pm)

One session will focus on the Northwest Ohio Catholic (Bryan Area) grade school league rules:

  • Thursday, November 2nd @ Bryan St. Patrick Parish (7-10 pm)

One session will focus on the Hearthstone Area high school league rules:

  • Monday, October 23rd @ Glandorf St. John Parish (7-10 pm)

A coach who needs to re-certify may attend any of these sessions.

In order to go through re-certification, a coach must register by completing the enclosed form and send in the $10 fee.  If a coach does not pre-register, then he/she must pay $20 at the door.

New coaches who need to go through the initial certification MAY attend any of the above sessions, but will then will need to register to attend one of the initial certification classes (November 11th, November 18th or December 3rd).  Likewise, any basketball coach who does not need to go through re-certification because his/her certificate was renewed in the spring or summer is encouraged to attend the first hour of recertification sessions.  There is no charge or registration necessary for attending only the first portion of the recertification if you do not need to re-certify.

If you have already pre-registered (mailed in your form and payment) for one of the above sessions then you just need to show up at the site for which you are registered to attend.  If you have any questions please feel free to call our office (244-6711, ext. 4932).

In addition to attending the appropriate certification class, every CYO coach is required to complete the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) online Concussion Course in response to Ohio House Bill 143 which took effect in April 2013.  You may do this by visiting

https://nfhslearn.com/courses/61064/concussion-in-sports.

You must then provide CYO with a copy of your Certificate of Completion – you may do this electronically to

CYO@toledodiocese.org.

This Concussion Course is NOT included in certification classes, so coaches must complete this 30 minute course on their own time.  The Concussion certification is valid for three years, so if you have completed this course previously in response to Ohio House Bill, 143, you may need to retake the class since it’s been a law for longer than three years.

Every CYO coach must now also view the approved (ODE/ODH/OHSAA) free online Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness class (and take the post-test) in response to Ohio Senate Bill 252 which became effective August 1, 2017.  You may access the Sudden Cardiac Arrest video and test questions by clicking on the link below

:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfnVlVvAQsKwpvqqzwKZuVsbU1NiKhbukDh9N36LlQItdAm2A/viewform?usp=sf_link.

This link will then send a notification to the CYO Office that you completed the test, so you don’t need to email or bring a Certificate of Completion with you.  This law currently requires that coaches retake the class every 12 months.

If you intend to coach basketball this upcoming fall season, you MUST have your certificate from the NFHS online concussion course and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness class on file in the CYO Office before you will be considered fully certified.  This means that in order to receive your lanyard at the end of the initial certification class or re-certification class you attend, this must already have been submitted.

If you have any questions regarding your certification status, please call our office and speak with Kathy Rakay, CYO Administrative Assistant (244-6711, ext. 4932).  While we do not enjoy confronting coaches who appear to be coaching without current certification status, we will do so.  It is unfair to those of you who do what is required of you to minister to youth in our diocese.

Coaches will receive a CYO lanyard/name insert upon completion of certification (having already completed the online NFHS Concussion Awareness course & the approved Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness course), so it is very important that you keep your certification status current.   ALL coaches will be required to wear their lanyard if they intend to sit on the bench this season.  If you do not certify, you will not be issued a lanyard.

Sincerely,

Mr. Shane Burnworth

Coaching Requirements

Anyone who wishes to coach in the CYO program in the Diocese of Toledo is required to:

  1. Maintain current CYO certification status (first an “initial class” and then a re-certification class every 12 months thereafter);
  2. Complete the Protecting Youth & Those Who Serve Them Course;
  3. Sign and submit a CYO Coaches’ Code of Ethics form every 12 months;
  4. Sign and submit an Expectations For All Those Who Minister to Youth form;
  5. Complete background check through www.virtusonline.org and receive a favorable report.
  6. Complete the NFHS online Concussion Course in response to Ohio House Bill 143 (took effect in April 2013) at https://nfhslearn.com/ courses/61064/concussion-in-sports and submit a copy of the Certificate of Completion to CYO.
  7. Complete the NFHS online Sudden Cardiac Arrest Course in response to Ohio Senate Bill 152 (takes effects in August 2017). Details as to how to access course to follow (not available yet)

The above first four requirements will be completed by attending a CYO certification class.  The online background check through www.virtusonline.org  must be completed before the CYO season begins.  The Concussion and Sudden Cardiac Arrest courses MUST be taken online and a Certificate of Completion submitted to CYO.

If a coach fails to maintain current certification, the coach loses his/her eligibility to coach in the CYO.  Lanyards are issued for each course attended and must be worn when coaching.
